Wallraf-Richartz-Museum
Clarifying the History of Artworks

Obenmarspforten, Am Kölner Rathaus, 50667 Köln

The Wallraf-Richartz-Museum is Cologne’s oldest art gallery, with collections covering 700 years of art history. Its first purpose-built home opened in 1861 on the site of the old Franciscan Friary (see left image above), but the collections were subsequently kept and exhibited at various locations in the city. The museum only moved to its present location in 2001. Tasked with the acquisition, preservation and presentation of artworks, it is committed to research, including provenance issues, with specific reference to works stolen or unjustly acquired under the National Socialist regime.
