Ilse Salberg, a versatile cultural personality
Hohe Straße 81, 50667 Köln
The Jewish family Salberg’s shop for souvenirs, jewellery, fashion accessories, and leather goods stood here. The business soon grew into a chain store with branches in several German and Belgian cities.
Salberg’s shops were also subject to the nationwide
boycott of Jewish businesses on 1 April 1933. Around a year later, an anti-Semitic article appeared in the National Socialist newspaper Westdeutscher Beobachter under the headline ‘Jewish crooks damaging the economy!’ accusing the Salbergs of fraud, starvation wages and breach of labour agreements.
