Cilly Marx’s reading primer

Cilly Marx (1893–1972) was a teacher at the Israelite elementary school and co-author of the Domfibel, an early-reader for elementary schools. When Jewish schools were banned from using the book during the Nazi era, she wrote a new primer for the Jewish Teachers’ Association. The school authorities only authorised its use after various corrections had been made – this means as an example in accordance with National Socialist ideology, all illustrations had to show Jewish children with dark, rather than blonde hair.

The illustrations were created by the Cologne Jewish artists Otto Schloss and Walter Herzberg.
