Religious life in Glockengasse

After its inauguration in 1861, Glockengasse Synagogue stood alone for several decades as Cologne’s Jewish centre and the heart of the community’s religious life. Then in 1884 the new Orthodox community Adass Jeshurun built its own synagogue in St. Apernstrasse. This was followed in 1899 by the Roonstrasse Synagogue, built for the liberal community in order to relieve pressure on Glockengasse. From the early 20th century, that synagogue became in turn the centre of conservative Judaism in Cologne, providing regular religious services on Shabbat and holidays and catering for events like Bar/Bat Mitzvot and weddings.
