‘The Cologne Synagogue’
A report from Vienna
The question of a suitable architectural style for synagogues was of concern not only to 19th century Jewish communities. Newspapers and magazines – especially architectural journals – of the period indicate the interest shown by the general public.
More than 20 years after the opening of Glockengasse Synagogue, the Viennese architect Julius Deutsch published an article on the building in the Allgemeine Bauzeitung of 1885. In addition to an in-depth discussion of the history and style of synagogue construction, the article contains four illustrations with many details of the building, which was destroyed in 1938. These are particularly valuable for reconstruction.
