The Moorish style

The question of a general national architectural style was very controversial in the 19th century. Many older building styles, such as the Gothic style in church architecture, experienced a revival. There had never been a distinct Jewish architectural style: synagogues followed the style of their time and surroundings.

In mid-century, however, a new so-called Moorish style became popular for synagogues. Glockengasse Synagogue followed this style, recognisable in its horseshoe-shaped arches, slender columns and geometric decorations. The style was not used in church buildings, but could be found in villas, interiors, and pavilions of the period.
