A fountain in memory of 1,100 murdered children
The octagonal fountain in the centre of the square commemorates the 1,100 Jewish children deported from Cologne by the Nazi regime and killed in concentration and extermination camps. Their names stand on the bronze plaques on the fountain’s walls. A sculpture of the Lion of Judah, a symbol of the Jewish people, stands on the fountain column. Leaning on the tablets of the law and a globe, it stretches towards the sky with a pleading gesture. Former Jawne student Hermann Gurfinkel created the statue. The fountain was inaugurated on 25 September 1997. Today, memorial events for the victims of the Shoah are held here.
